[Mixtape] Monsoon Season 🌧️

It’s that time of the year again! Dark rainy skies, meethi meethi hawa, steaming cups of chai and something chatpate on the side. Here is a preview to a collection of songs for the rainy season! (Stick around for the playlist link below <3)

#1: Minnalkkodi (Hridhayam, 2022)

A song that captures the excitement of thunderstorms, power outages, electricity in the air and the inescapable urge to go outside and dance in the rain. The word “minnalkodi” means radiance or grace of lightning in Malayalam (according to Google chacha).

#2: Sawar Gayi (Saawariya, 2007)

A song like rainwater hitting clay pots and tin roofs, and rolling thunder. Actually all of Saawariya’s songs can be considered monsoon songs because that entire movie is a monsoon movie.

#3: Nirmohiya (Bandish Bandits S2, 2024)

I know the obvious choice would have been to put Sakhi Mori on this list (it’s there in the actual playlist – there’s a total of 4 songs from Bandish Bandits here and I think I’ll add more from S1), but I’ve had Nirmohiya on repeat since the skies started darkening and the winds started shifting. It was also a close call with Saavan Mohe Tarsaaye.

#4: Baalam (Divyam Sodhi & KHWAAB)

Something beautiful and pared back to listen to as you enjoy a steaming cup of chai on your balcony and watch the clouds roll over your city.

#5: Amar Haat Bandhibi

Rishi Panda’s voice flows like a river in this beautiful rendition of a (decidedly melancholic) Bengali folk song originally collected by musicologist Shantanu Dutta. More details on the lyrics here.
